Beautifully bespoke wine storage is becoming more of a must-have these days for reasons ranging from convenient access to your favourite bottles to increased property value. And chances are, you’ve probably seen some magnificent examples online or in person that have got you thinking about commissioning a space for your own valued vintages.
But unfortunately, appearance doesn’t tell the whole story. Is the wine wall you’re admiring solidly built? And equally important, is the artisan and/or company behind it truly trustworthy? When Exquisite Wine Cellars was established nearly three years ago, it was built on a foundation of respect for our clients’ time, trust and finances. We put ourselves in their proverbial shoes and asked, “What would we be looking for in a contractor that was going to build a such a significant addition to our home?”
Here are the things that every conscientious consumer should be thinking about as they are considering companies to work with:
First-hand Recommendations – There’s nothing like friends and family who are wine enthusiasts to give you an honest assessment of contractors they’ve worked with, or have heard positive reviews about. If you’ve seen a wine storage space you’ve admired, don’t be shy about asking the owner who constructed it. Most people who have invested in a wine wall or cellar are more than happy to talk about it and answer all your questions.
Wine Seller Intel – The next time you’re chatting to your local wine merchant about your favourite cabernet, consider asking them about local contractors, as well. Chances are good they will have some valuable information to share about wine storage builders in the area.
Relevant References – If you get references from your potential contractor, be sure to follow up with them and don’t be afraid to ask probing questions regarding the contractor’s performance, such as:
- Were they easy or difficult to work with?
- Did they listen to your concerns and make you feel welcome to ask questions?
- Were they forthcoming with progress reports on the project?
- Did they adhere to agreed upon deadlines?
Check Credentials – Most states have licensing procedures in place for all types of contractors, including those that build wine storage. Make sure the contractor you’re considering is:
- Licensed in your state
- In compliance with all regulatory requirements to construct in your area
- Current on their business licenses
It’s also highly suggested that you search legal records to determine whether your potential contractor has been the subject of lawsuits regarding faulty workmanship or unethical business practices.
